Team Member Spotlight: Meet Jacob Loucks
From loss and mentorship to a calling in financial planning
Some careers begin with a college major. Others begin with a moment that quietly reshapes a person’s life. For Jacob Loucks, financial planning was more like a calling gradually realized.
Long before joining Barnett Financial & Tax, Jacob understood financial uncertainty not just as a theory, but as lived experience. When he was just one year old, his father passed away, leaving his mother to raise four young children. The family relied largely on Social Security and the generosity of others who stepped in during a difficult season.
That experience left a lasting imprint, shaping how Jacob thinks about planning, security, and the difference a single thoughtful financial decision can make in a family’s future.
A Connection That Began Years Ago
Jacob’s relationship with Rick Barnett did not begin in an office. It began years earlier through church and school, where their families crossed paths in a close-knit Christian community in Michigan.
Over time, Rick became more than a familiar face. He became one of several mentors who stepped into Jacob’s life during his formative years.
At one point, Rick noticed Jacob’s athletic potential and offered to help fund basketball training. The gesture opened an opportunity for Jacob but it also left a deep impression. Jacob saw not only someone successful, but someone willing to invest in another person’s future.
That example stayed with him.
As Jacob approached college and began thinking seriously about his career, he found himself asking a simple question: What exactly does Mr. Barnett do?
The answer would help set the trajectory of his own professional life.
From Basketball Courts to Balance Sheets
Basketball dominated much of Jacob’s youth. He trained year-round and eventually continued playing in college. In spite of his athleticism, he had an academic scholarship. Alongside athletics, he was wrestling with a larger question: what kind of work would allow him to combine his analytical abilities with his desire to help people?
He knew he excelled at mathematics. He knew he valued meaningful relationships. And he knew he was not built for a profession that kept him behind a desk with little human interaction.
Jacob initially pursued accounting, but as college progressed he realized his strengths aligned more naturally with advising than with traditional CPA work. He wanted to sit across from people, hear their stories, understand their concerns, and build financial strategies that made sense for their lives.
That realization led him ultimately to financial advising where he believed he belonged.
Why This Work Matters
Ask Jacob what excites him most about helping clients, and his answer reaches beyond markets and portfolios. He has seen firsthand what happens when families lack a financial plan. He has also seen the opposite: individuals who worked hard for decades and saved diligently, yet entered retirement unprepared for the realities of taxes, income distribution, healthcare costs, and longevity.
The difference often isn’t effort—it’s guidance.
That’s where Jacob finds purpose. He enjoys helping clients move from confusion to clarity, identifying gaps in a plan before those gaps become crises. Retirement income planning, tax strategy, and asset structure are areas he speaks about with particular enthusiasm.
Underlying it all is a simple motivation: helping people live with greater confidence and peace of mind.
The Barnett Advantage
One of the things Jacob values most about Barnett Financial & Tax is the firm’s integrated approach. Many firms specialize in a single discipline—financial planning, investment advice, taxes, or estate planning. Most of the various financial specialists like to stay in their lane to avoid liability; a CPA typically will not give financial planning advice, for example, and a financial planner would never do your taxes.
But real life rarely separates financial decisions so neatly. Retirement income affects taxes. Taxes affect Medicare costs. Estate planning affects family security. Investment choices affect everything else. Lack of integration in financial plannings hurts and inconveniences families seeking services.
At Barnett Financial & Tax, those pieces are addressed together. Clients benefit from coordinated planning that integrates financial strategy, tax insight, investment management, and estate considerations under one roof.
For Jacob, that holistic model is one of the firm’s greatest strengths—and one of the reasons clients often feel greater clarity and confidence after beginning the planning process.
Bridging Generations
Jacob also brings something increasingly valuable to the profession: fluency in both personal relationships and modern technology.
He values face-to-face conversations, trust, and long-term client relationships. At the same time, he belongs to a generation that grew up adapting quickly to new tools and digital platforms.
For clients who feel intimidated by technology, that adaptability becomes an asset. Whether the task is walking someone through an online portal or helping them understand digital financial tools, Jacob approaches the process with patience and clarity.
The result is an advising style that feels both modern and grounded.
Life Outside the Office
Outside the office, Jacob carries the same discipline that shaped him as an athlete. After stepping away from competitive basketball, he shifted his focus toward weightlifting and long-term physical wellness, embracing routines that support strength and longevity.
He and his wife, Brianna—whom he has known since fourth grade—were married in 2023. Together they enjoy staying active through sports, pickleball, hiking, and regular workouts at the gym.
And then there’s a detail that adds a little personality to the story: Jacob enjoys video games. He enjoys immersive strategy and survival games, and he admits—with a smile—that Brianna occasionally joins him for a round of Fortnite. It’s a small glimpse of the personality behind the professional.
Nothing takes the edge off like pulling out a legendary Rocket Launcher and turning a pixelated monster into a fireworks display.
The Deeper Thread
What stands out most about Jacob isn’t simply his athletic background or professional trajectory. It’s gratitude.
He speaks openly about the people who invested in him early in life—mentors like Rick Barnett and supporters such as Dale and Loretta Oskey, whose generosity helped make his education possible.
Those experiences shaped his long-term vision. Jacob hopes one day to extend the same kind of support to others—to become the sort of mentor who helps open doors for the next generation.
That mindset already shows itself in small ways: encouraging younger friends to begin saving early, offering guidance when he can, and looking for quiet opportunities to serve others.
There is ambition there, certainly—but it is paired with humility.
A New Chapter in Charlotte
Now settled in the Charlotte area, Jacob views this season as both a fresh start and a meaningful opportunity. He’s enthusiastic about the city, energized by the team, and excited about the work ahead.
When asked how he approaches this next chapter, his answer is simple:
“From here on out, it’s pedal to the metal.”
That sounds about right.
And for the clients and families he now serves, the impact of that commitment is only beginning.
